> The 24/7 Movement High School Lesson Plan

Watch the 24/7 Movement’s mock crash video titled “They Should Be Here.” The video presents a dramatized but realistic scenario involving teen drivers and passengers, showing the consequences of impaired and distracted driving.

Explain increased potential of injury when employing high risk behaviors while operating and occupying a vehicle (e.g., distracted driving, impaired driving, seat belt safety, and pedestrians).

Students will be able to identify and describe the dangers associated with distracted driving, impaired driving, improper seat belt use, and pedestrian risks.

  • What are some common distractions or high-risk behaviors for teen drivers, and how do they increase the chances of a crash?
  • How does alcohol or drug use affect your ability to drive, and what can you do to be prepared before you’re in a situation involving substances?
  • What message does “They Should Be Here” send, and how can understanding the real-life consequences of risky driving choices help you protect yourself and others?

After viewing the video as a class, lead a brief class discussion using the provided questions above. Then, have students write a short reflective response (5–7 sentences) on what part of the video impacted them most and how it changed or reinforced their views on distracted or impaired driving.

You may choose to provide guiding prompts or sentence starters:

  • Before this video, I didn’t realize…
  • I now understand that…
  • One thing I will do differently because of this is…

Review each student’s reflective response to assess whether they can clearly describe at least one danger associated with distracted driving, impaired driving, improper seat belt use, or pedestrian risks.
