> Project Yellow Light High School Lesson Plan

Create a PSA to encourage others to avoid driving distracted, and potentially submit to win a scholarship through Project Yellow Light.

Explain increased potential of injury when employing high risk behaviors while operating and occupying a vehicle (e.g., distracted driving, impaired driving, seat belt safety, and pedestrians).

Students will be able to identify and describe the dangers associated with distracted driving, impaired driving, improper seat belt use, and pedestrian risks.

  • What do you think is the most common distraction for teen drivers, and how can it lead to dangerous situations on the road?
  • Have you ever been in a situation where you noticed someone driving distracted or impaired? How did it make you feel, and what actions could you take to promote safer driving?
  • Why do you think creating a PSA is an effective way to spread awareness about the risks of distracted or impaired driving? What message would you want to highlight in your PSA?

Create a Public Service Announcement (PSA) addressing the dangers of distracted driving, following the guidelines of the Project Yellow Light scholarship competition. Students should focus on discouraging phone use while driving, including texting, commenting, or messaging. After creating their PSAs, students can submit their work to the Project Yellow Light competition for a chance to win a scholarship.

Review the PSAs created by students to evaluate their understanding of the dangers associated with distracted driving. Assess the effectiveness of their message in discouraging phone use while driving. Consider factors such as creativity, clarity of information, and potential impact on the target audience.
