> Ollie Otter 3rd Grade Lesson Plan

Request an in-person presentation or set a date for a virtual option and receive an Ollie Otter School Kit at OllieOtter.org.

Discuss appropriate safety restraint use as a passenger and ways to communicate best practice to others (public transportation, rideshare and personal vehicle).

By the end of the lesson, students will correctly identify when seat belts and booster seats should be used, explain their safety benefits, demonstrate understanding of height requirements, and promote best practices in various transportation settings.

  • What does a booster seat do?
  • What would happen if you needed to be in a booster seat but you didn’t use one?
  • How can you make sure everyone in your car is buckled into the safest seat possible?

Break your students up into groups and have them measure objects around the room. Give each group the task of creating a structure that is exactly 4 feet, 9 inches tall using the Ollie Otter Measuring Poster in your School Kit (provided to you following presentation). Do a call-and-response with the students with “Under 4’9″?” and “It’s booster time!” to help them remember the significance of the measurement.

Ask students to split into two groups based on their height compared to their structures: Booster Seat and No Booster Seat. Ensure they have measured correctly, and ask them to write a letter to someone who regularly drives their car about their experience in the classroom, explaining why they may or may not need to be in a booster seat.
