> Guest Speaker 3rd Grade Lesson Plan

Invite a guest speaker through the THSO Speakers Bureau by completing THSO Speakers Bureau Request Form. Select a guest speaker based on your specific needs, focusing on topics such as Seat Belt Safety and Child Passenger Safety.

Discuss appropriate safety restraint use as a passenger and ways to communicate best practice to others (public transportation, rideshare and personal vehicle).

By the end of the lesson, students will correctly identify when seat belts and booster seats should be used, explain their safety benefits, demonstrate understanding of height requirements, and promote best practices in various transportation settings.

  • What is a booster seat, and why is it important to use it if you need one?
  • What could happen if you don’t use a booster seat when you’re supposed to?
  • How can you check that everyone in your car is using their seatbelt or booster seat correctly?

As students exit the presentation, have them participate in a quick “Safety Size-Up” station. Set up a height chart near the exit and have students measure themselves against it. Based on their height, they should state whether they need a booster seat or can use a regular seat belt.

Observe students as they measure themselves and listen to their responses about appropriate safety restraints. Note whether they correctly identify their size category and the corresponding safety device (booster seat or seat belt) they should use.
