Discuss the importance of wearing your seatbelt including making sure you use all parts of the belt, don’t share a seatbelt, wear it every time you are in the car and always sit in the back seat.

By the end of the lesson, students will correctly identify and describe the function of all parts of a seatbelt, explain the importance of proper seatbelt use, and demonstrate the correct way to wear a seatbelt with 90% accuracy.

  1. Does everyone buckle up when they’re in the car? What are some reasons you might not want to wear a seatbelt?
  2. Why do we wear a seatbelt? What could happen if we don’t wear our seatbelt?
  3. What are some ways you can help everyone in your car remember to always wear a seatbelt?

Have students draw their favorite toy (or character or themselves) sitting in a booster seat in the car (EmptyBooster). Then give the students two strips of tape and tell them to give their character a “seat belt” using the tape.

Review their tape “seat belts” to ensure the toy has one shoulder strap and one belt across their waste that come together to “buckle in.”
