Invite a guest speaker through the THSO Speakers Bureau by completing THSO Speakers Bureau Request Form. Select a guest speaker based on your specific needs, focusing on topics such as Distracted Driving, Seat Belt Safety, and Child Passenger Safety.
Identify best practices of occupant safety (not being a distraction in the vehicle, normalizing booster seats and seat belts, and driver awareness in work zones, school crossing, etc.).
By the end of the lesson, students will define and advocate for best practices of occupant safety, including minimizing distractions, promoting booster seats and seat belts, and discussing strategies to ensure safety when choosing who to ride with.
As students exit the presentation, have them participate in a quick “Safety Checklist.” Each student should tell the teacher or volunteer at the door one way to be a safe passenger (e.g., “Wear my seatbelt”) and one way to avoid being a distraction (e.g., “Stay quiet when the driver needs to focus”).
Listen to students’ responses as they exit. Note whether they correctly identify safe passenger behaviors and ways to minimize distractions, based on the information provided in the presentation.
