Invite a guest speaker through the THSO Speakers Bureau by completing THSO Speakers Bureau Request Form. Select a guest speaker based on your specific needs, focusing on topics such as Impaired Driving and Senior Driver Safety.
Discuss the importance of riding with others ensuring you know what an “experienced” driver is and the importance of not riding with anyone who has been drinking or using drugs.
By the end of the lesson, students will define an “experienced” driver, discuss the dangers of riding with impaired drivers, and develop strategies for ensuring safety when choosing who to ride with.
As students exit the presentation, have them participate in a quick “Safe Ride Check.” Each student should tell the teacher or volunteer at the door one type of person they should not ride with (e.g., “Someone who’s been drinking”) and one type of person they should ride with (e.g., “An experienced, sober adult”).
Listen to students’ responses as they exit. Note whether they correctly identify unsafe drivers to avoid and safe drivers to ride with, based on the information provided in the presentation.
